Czech Interview for Apokalypsa
1) Hi Dave...on 30th of June you are playing at Apokalypsa venue in Brno. So here is few questions . Firstly looking forvard to come here? We can see you here quite often...
I always think playing the Czech Republic is a warm experience, there are some good local djs and the crowd are always ready to be open.
2) Do you still see differences in the audience at diferent places in the world where playing? About czech people see, that the audience is different and enjoys more. Is that true?
Well the people in Holland seem taller than the people in Japan and the people in Lisbon are browner than those in Newcastle. Some audiences can be quiter and more intense in watching you and others can be very vocal, but I wouldnt say there is much difference anymore between countries, you can get those differences in Cities 50 miles away from each other.
3) As being on the dance scene from nearly the very beginning, experiencing underground to commerce, which of the epoche do consider to be closest to you?
Its tricky, obviously you feel proud of shaping the past in your own way, but to stay in the past professionally is a dangerous thing, it stops progress (some people are still angry that I dropped playing Vinyl), I love the old electro although I can hear the holes more now, I enjoy living the moment now and utilising technology that I only dreamed about in 1988. The only period of time I get romantic about is the Punk period, sadly The Ruts song S.U.S. still holds true.
Live Forwards Learn Backwards
4) Do you follow the trends in the dance or you dont look at them?
Fuck Trends and the Muppets that follow them, they miss religion&..they are the same people that went to relgious ceremonies as a kid with their parents, then tell everyone that they dont believe and then find themselves in church (or similar) and become religious again&&.Bah Bah Bah&bloody lost sheep.
5) You are very respected both as a dj and as a producer. What is for your production and your gigs typical? What you think does make you different?
Mmmmmm
6) Is it even possible today for a young new djs to get ´´up´´? What would you recommend them?
Bloody difficult, but the internet should help them a little more, for some strange reason you have to make a successful record to cross over as a dj, which is my mind is perverse up to about 3 years ago, now the technologies are converging so some of the talents needed do work for both, but the choice of records you play has nothing to do with how you make them. Whenever I see a new dj that is good I get really excited and try to get them gigs outside their home territory. I recommend that if you are as good as you believe you are and you keep working you might get there, but you need a shit load of dedication and be prepared to sacrifice a large part of your social life.
7) Who from the other names do you respekt? Are you involved by somebody?
Loads, but Im not reverential about anyone living, not anymore&I have been disappointed too many times , all my heroes are dead.
8) What about you and vinyls? Not using them anymore? Do they have a chance to survive?
Its just the messanger, its not the message, all that matters is the message, Im not teary eyed about the demise of vinyl, even the amount of carbon tons I burn each trip are significantly reduced by 20kg each flight.
9) What cant be missing at your gig?
Bass
10) You seem to be enjoying your gigs. What does mainly influence you?
Bass and people that appreciate it.
11) You prefer big Venues or clubs?
Both are important, Clubs you can still learn at, you see peoples eyes and their sweat, big venues can be immensely moving emotionally. All are good really if the production is well thought out.
12) You have some unforgettable gig? Do you remember your first gig in front of the people?
Palm Beach in Girona last week was mindblowing, first gig was off tape decks at a friends party when I was 13.
13) As a producer you have already made many albums and hits. What is for you the most important?
Make music you believe in, dont just go in the studio because you have the time spare, do it because you need to.
14) What is the best record ever in your opinion?
Too many to mention, Anti Pope by the Damned, Wild Horses by the Stones, Funky Funk Funk by Reese, Cant Conquer Natty dreadlocks by Dr.Alimantado, Twilight by Maze, Your Love by Frankie Knuckles, Ride by M.E. Sinatra by Helmet. Were No Here by Mogwai, Let me Try by MC 5. No Buddy by Silver Bullit, MurderMile by the Kills.
Best Lyric Godless and horny and trapped by taboo, which is better than being sexless, pious and wiped out like you Julian Cope&.sometimes other people are better at describing a mistake you made in your life than you are.
15) How would you describe style which you are presenting now?
The same as I always have&.My Own.
16) On many video we can see you with extravagant clothes and with make-up. Does it have some reason or thats just you?
Wow what videos are they&.are you sure its me? X
17) Do you think charts make sense?
Charts are very important, its good to give recognition.
18) Who is the most important name for the dance scene now?
Everyone and no one.
19) Some young producer/dj project which you can recommed from the last time?
Dj Kammy
20) Do you remember your last time dancing at party?
Yep everytime I go to a gig as a fan, and most gigs I play at.
21) Now lets turn. Your opinion on the situation in the world. How do you see the future. What is for you the most important at the moment?
Stop fucking around with oil, lets become an advanced civilisation and stop fighting over organic matter, lets get solar panels on every roof, expand our knowledge on renewable energy and not think nuclear power is the be all and end all. Lets get education high up on the agenda, make it more accessable to everyone, lets recycle as much as we can. Just sensible things that most people think really. Lets have a new way of government where important long term issues like the enviroment dont get lost when a government tries to re-elect itself every 5 years.
